Human Rights Law is meant to protect people from being discriminated against, harassed, or denied accommodation based on their personal characteristics (age, sex, family status, race, indigeneity, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, source of income, marital status, etc.). Some examples of human rights violations include being fired from a job due to having a physical or mental disability, being denied a service due to sexual orientation, or being sexually harassed at work. Provincial, federal, and international human rights laws all apply in British Columbia. Under the BC Human Rights Code, people are protected from discrimination in six areas: employment, tenancy, services available to the public (for example, business, stores, hotels, restaurants, schools, police), unions, purchase of property, and publications. The Canadian Human Rights Act protects people from discrimination when they are employed by or receive services from the federal government, First Nations Governments, or federally regulated companies (such as trucking companies, banks, broadcasters, or telecommunications companies).
