Motor Vehicle Accidents

Every year in British Columbia hundreds of people are killed and tens of thousands are injured in accidents involving cars, trucks and motorcycles. Vehicle accidents account for the majority of personal injury claims and lawsuits in B.C. A motor vehicle accident can happen to anyone at any time, and can result in unexpected physical and emotional injuries that can seriously disrupt a person’s life and livelihood.

Accidents happen on city streets and rural roads, and range from minor rear-enders to head-on highway collisions and rollovers. Even in accidents involving minor vehicle damage can result in injuries with long term effects and can be financially devastating. Injuries can range from cuts and bruises and soft tissue injuries to more serious injuries involving broken bones, spinal cord injuries, neurological injuries, or traumatic brain injuries. In many cases the pain from injuries becomes chronic and long lasting and can become complicated by psychological symptoms of depression or anxiety.

The recovery period following a motor vehicle accident can be difficult, involving a busy schedule of doctors appointments and therapy treatments, physical pain and worry about whether or when you will recover and return to your normal activities and employment. On top of all of this, you must report your claim to ICBC in order to receive compensation for your injuries and reimbursement for your out-of-pocket expenses and any lost income. It is important to thoroughly understand your legal rights and extent of your injuries before you settle you claim with ICBC, especially if your injuries will continue to affect you in the future.

Some types of accident claims are handled differently, such as accidents ICBC deems low velocity impact collisions or hit and run accidents for example. Legislation and ICBC’s internal policies determine how these claims will be handled, and often, injured claimants find it difficult and stressful dealing with ICBC on their own. Remember, your ICBC adjuster works for an insurance corporation, and not you.
